I have some advice for you, my friend.

Move. To. Canada.

It's all about the social programs and public health insurance. OHIP, baby.

Bonus: Toronto has a decent comic scene, and we have more trees than you guys, as well as oodles of government funding for local talent, so you might be able to publish Alternative for less here in the north.

Extra bonus: Our beer tastes better and actually contains alcohol.

(ps - Sorry if this comment sounds flippant. I genuinely sympathize with your medical predicament, having had friends with Crohn's, I know it's not nice. I hope that both your health and the insurance situation improve. Peace.)

No - it doesn't sound flippant - our health industry is in a shambles because of insurance companies.

A couple of years ago, I joined the Labor Party to try to be an activist to push USA toward socialized medicine.

...plus we can always use cool folks like you up here. You can help balance out our Prime Minister!

p.s.
I'm really sorry about all this...from someone with a whole ton of health problems, who has required many specialized and expensive tests/treatments, I sympathize and hope you come out ahead. :(

Luckily my fiancée gives me a lot of moral and practical support - but it really sucks.

Jeff, as one of the haplessly uninsured, I know you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Hang in there. Sounds like a hellish situation indeed, but try take it one day at a time.

I couldn't possibly imagine being able to get/afford individual health insurance if I didn't have it through my work for the last 9 years. No way possible.

I can't imagine the stress that puts you in. Hell, I don't have any health issues AND I don't have health insurance and THAT stresses me out. Hang in there, buddy. I'm sending you big fat well wishes and good thoughts.

Alex keeps telling me that New York is one of the better states in terms of public services - Florida definitely is not.

I gotta look into that. Be nice to get a "check up" once in awhile.

I currently have my general practitioner and gastroenterologist sending letters to my health insurance company. Maybe Oprah can help me...

Oprah is the closest thing we have to a superhero in this world.
