hellloooo darling! i have missed you! (even though it has been me who has been away)

yes! i never knew it either ... nature is amazing. to me they aren't ugly ... to me they are beautiful, as someone said above, like polynesian dancers in grass skirts! wow, EVERYTHING has a purpose and the palms that everyone so fastidiously removes the branches on do too! i picture one of these after 100 years ... if they live that long ... the grass skirts by that time must be amazing!

but i ramble again. the photos were taken about a block from my house! i never even knew they were there ... i went exploring one day ... there was an area i walked back into ... i will be posting some more photos of that area. :)

oh and about the trimming ... yes, the city here makes sure all of the palms along major roadways, etc. are all kept perfectly trimmed. amazing how well nature can get along without us.

it makes me wonder how many species we may have lost due to loss of habitat.

I too like the look of an unkempt palm. It does have a certain beauty.

You touched upon one of the reasons that dead palm fronds are trimmed from the tree tho. They provide excellent cover for animals. Unfortunately some of those animals are none too welcome in a persons home. I've seen rats the size of cats living in palm trees. That and palmetto bugs. *shudder*

Really nice pics! Especially 2, 4 & 7.

ahh, i can tell you speak from experience, because you speak from experience. ;)  hardly a shudder from you when speaking of rats the size of cats or palmetto bugs. (a tiny shudder, but that's to be expected.) i've had black widows make their homes inside my mailbox so that when i reach in to grab the mail, there she is, front and center. i once saw a host of yellow jackets sting a hornet to death in my front yard, inches from my bare feet. living here is like living in Wild Kingdom, and that is with the palm fronds trimmed! so, i know what you mean. some things are necessities ... or perhaps i should move to the country. as long as the critters stay outside the house, i'm fine with it. well, i'm not counting insects. ;-p i'm never fine with the insects. although they don't make me squeal, i'm forced to tolerate them ... but i don't have to like them. die, die, die. ;-p

thanks for the feedback on which photos you like. i had a ton to choose from because my finger doesn't know when to stop pressing the shutter button.

I never saw a black widow until we moved into our house in Inman, SC. I've seen some beauts living in our pump house. Gorgeous spiders. If you like that sort of thing. :o)

I would have loved to see the yellowjackets kill the hornet. Nature is fierce. I saw a dragonfly munching on a butterfly yesterday. There was something beautiful and horrifying about it. I wished I had my camera on me. Isn't that always the way... I see the most amazing things when I've left my camera behind. I figure it's a lesson in "seeing".

i read that the genus Sabal has 332 species alone. there are 1100 species of palm throughout the world.

i like your use of the term "shaggy."

thank you :)
We have a huge variety of palms here but I didn't realize there were so many types of Sabal. We have a type that is considered the state tree and a couple other types that I knew had to be related because of the fan shaped leaves.
