"There was evidence found at the scene. That is the purpose of our early declaration of it being an arson-caused fire," Prather said. He would not describe the evidence. Video Watch how the evidence points to arson"
I live in British Columbia, where we have a lot of forest fires every summer. It sometimes happens that they are deliberately set - the summer the fire chief in a small town in the interior was suspended on suspicion of arson, in connection with an investigation into 20 grass fires that had been set in the area in 2003. He was exonerated when another firefighter admitted to setting them, blaming his PTSD and alcoholism for his pyro fetish.
Anyway, yeah, crazies - Southern California is full of them. Remember that old Dead Kennedys song?
I've heard of that phenomenon, where firefighters (or wanna-be firefighters) set fires in the hopes that they'll get a chance to be a hero. I've almost been hit on my bike a couple times this summer by ambulance drivers-- I wonder if they're up to the same thing.
Since the reading for my class this week is all about planning for and mitigating disasters (Hurricane Andrew, Katrina, the Loma Prieta quake, the Kobe quake, the Scissors Sisters, 9/11, what have you), and since so many of my students are from southern California, there has been a lot of talk about these fires.
Naturally, I led my students in a discussion of who possibly could stand to benefit from these fires. And after the housing bubble burst, especially in southern California, there's a lot o houses and apartments that need to be filled at premium prices...
While I'm sure you know I've been an occasional resident of the state of Heightened Paranoia, I can hardly believe anyone would set the southern half of your state on fire to fill condos. But maybe I'm naive.
