Maybe I'm missing something...why do the examples in the man page for tar have double v's? What's the purpose of adding a flag twice?

Eventually, I found the answer here. This is fucking ludicrous tbh - something this trivial shouldn't be omitted from such a simple document, and if you're going to use it in an example, say what it does there ( Read more... )

To be fair, that manpage does say use info instead, and the information you want is in info.

I did notice that, but the info page on Ubuntu just seems to initially reiterate the man page and it's not mentioned in any of the extended text.

I still use man myself out of force of habit, but the GNU stuff has been all about info for years now. Stupid Linux.
