[Geek, Dear Lazyweb] Ubuntu Text Editor

Jan 27, 2009 20:53

So, I find myself in need of a decent text editor on the Ubuntu system I'm running. I've been using a combination of vim and gedit depending on context, but what I really need is a decent tabbed editor with a built-in system browser, something a little like Notepad++ or Crimson Editor on Windows ( Read more... )

Nedit or Komodo Edit. Never used either of them on Umbuntu tho' so I don't know what weird dependencies they might have.

Ta, Nedit looks horrifically ugly though - it puts me in mind of early java UIs (which were part of the reason I never bothered picking it up). I remember you mentioning Komodo before and I was trying to recall the name :) It's still downloading at the moment, I'm sure I'll update with my experiences later.

It's what you're used to. Nedit looks perfectly natural to me, but I started out using Motif not MS Windows :-)

Meh, what I'm used to is something that's had a team of actual UI designers work on it.

Strictly, what I started out using was an Archimedes anyway.

I know this is probably not what you're after, but I use screen and vim.

I accidentally launched text-Emacs a few weeks ago, and had to kill the process because I couldn't work out which meta-bucky-hickey keys it wanted so it would quit without saving.

control-x, control-c
Even if you hate emacs and will never use it for editing, that's the one command you should remember :)

I've downloaded Bluefish, Geany and Scite onto my Eee pc.

Out of these Scite seems to give me the most text editing for my resolution.

SciTE doesn't appear to have the project browser window I'm needing.

Komodo Edit looks to be the winner so far...

I typically use either kate or gedit for this kind of thing. You can probably "fix" kate by tweaking either the built-in settings or the underlying KDE settings for fonts and the like.
