Ugh, and after 15 years at the company, that's awful. Did he know it was coming, or was he suddenly presented with the notice today?

they've been circling the drain for years. this was 30 people out of approx 80. I predict they will either fold or be bought within the year.

Argh, that sucks. I just forwarded Lance's LinkedIn profile to my boss, asking her if we've got any suitable openings. I'll keep an eye out for any other opportunities that look promising.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Much good energy toward him finding something soon.

Thanks! I think about sligachan's experiences and I am terrified. He doesn't understand how scared I am and I am not sure how to communicate it in a helpful way. How did you support sligachan during his searching? It's hard on this side too.

I think Lobolance is in a very different situation than Sligachan. We knew, when he lost his job, that it was the very beginning of the crash and that it might take a while to find work again. We learned that Sligachan is in the worst demographic to get a job, 50+ the wrong sex and the wrong color. I think Lobolance has quite a different scenerio: younger, we are 3 years into this mess of a depression and I see things starting to get better. There are more jobs out there (yes there are) and quite a different attitude.

As for support, just keep up the hugs, the encouragement to keep going and the sympathy if he misses a job by a hairsbreadth. Do your best to reduce expectations about any given job. Keep applying to everything remotely reasonable. Assess Lobolance's resume and see what other things he could do, just like you have looked at your job. He has a WAY better chance of getting hired than Sligachan right now because he HAD a job until recently.
Above all, find opportunities to laugh together.

Yikes!

Believe it or not, Mr. Lance is 51. He just looks a lot younger. Exercise, good diet, and lots of happy snuggling. He's male and white, which does make things a bit harder and the weird thing is - as a trans man, he's got some other difficulties. It's a bit weird to explain why your resume changed from girlname to boyname ten years ago. Until ENDA passes, there's also no legal recourse for trans folks who are discriminated against in employment and even when it does it is the sue-someone-who-didn't-hire-you kind of recourse, which is not timely or certain.

I think things are picking up a bit too, and that's a wonderful thing to see. Also, since he can and will drive, that increases his possible pool of things.

We watched the Sharks last night with friends. Well, they watched the sharks game and I knitted on my first scarf ever. It was good!

I'm not sure how to send a LI profile to the right people. Hit me with a rez at the address I use for G+. I just found my employer has a number of different levels of tech writer positions open in Palo Alto.
