[That voice. If anything brings her more to her senses a moment as she snaps into a bossy tone.]
Does anyone sound alright, Harry? Honestly. It sounds as if everyone's losing their minds!
[A pause. Mum.] But your Mum's-- Oh, if she really won't. After all today is Independence Day. You really should spend it with them-- but that's wrong.
Harry. We're not supposed to be celebrating this, I'm sure of it.
You can't even what, Harry? [Frowning.] Whatever it is might be important you know.
[And underlying you do trust me don't you? is there, which makes her frown slightly. Harry... Potter, right? Her best friend. She was sure of it. Too many memories.]
Lakes always have been nice for thinking, haven't they?
[Oh! A spark.] There's also the fact we don't need an Independence Day. We've been free of foreign rule for thousands of years when the Romans left to fight out the Italians from Rome.
As do I. If I had my Potions equipment I'd be able to make us something... [Potions equipment?]
[And it was that in which she was wary of. Hermione glanced at her wand sitting beside her.]
I think I'll only be affronted by how weak it is right now. [A purse of her lips.] That's about the only bit I can fully believe right now. Otherwise the things I can do are impossible, aren't they?
[Her voice was sharp, the scolding, bossy tone she often had when she felt someone was looking down on her. She caught herself as other memories flickered. Worse the last thing she remembered her first round in Mayfield.]
Sorry, Miss Nina. This isn't as bad as other things.
[Just harder. How is torture easier to endure than Mayfield messing with your head? Merlin.]
...I know this town torments people for fun. I know that, but it sounds like you and I are in the same boat--like we're trying to convince ourselves we've always been here and that everything's normal.
Hell, I'm even starting to get confused on just what the hell my own name is, and I'm looking at journals in my own handwriting...but it's a language I can't remember.
If the telephone lines are any indication it sounds as if most of us are. What's real and isn't, honestly the whole thing feels like a blur right now. Struggling to see one just makes the other harder to forget. [Biting down on her lip.] Perhaps it's possible we've lived both lives and became one being over time. Although that is a bit odd...
Have you tried a form of hypnotic state? If it's our memories being tampered with it is possible to see which are more subliminal, but there would have to be someone capable of doing such here.
...no, I don't think it's likely we lived through both. One has to be right and the other's a lie, I'm sure of that much. What I don't know is which one I'm supposed to focus on and which I should stop thinking about.
Hypnosis? [Maybe there was some form of magecraft that could work out which memories were real, but...] It's possible, but the only person I can think of that might be able to do something is even worse off than we are right now.
[Rin would surely have been able to think of something. Lancer had no idea what a magus of her modern era could do for things like this--what? No, magic wasn't real. What was he thinking?
...wait, if magic wasn't real then why had he even thought of Rin in the first place?]
Well-- When you think about it which one feels most acceptable. I'm inclined to believe what's written more, if only for the fact it'd be impossible otherwise. There's proof right in front of me but it also feels wrong.
[Hermione frowned. Something pricked in the back of her mind that maybe she could do something, had done it before, but she wasn't sure. Nevermind the fact it was too advanced for the magic she had now.] No luck, then. Although I'm not sure who's more lucky: those of us who some or those who remember nothing at all.
A wise idea, noting these things so others can remember them for you if they forget. Good afternoon, Miss Granger. We've met before, but if you forgot, I am Chizuko Mikamo.
Given the state of how things often are here I've always felt the need to be prepared. Good afternoon, Miss Mikamo. [A pause.] I trust things aren't as terrible for you as they are others right now?
I am still in possession of most of my faculties. Perhaps everyone should find a trusted person and tell them important facts about themselves. It would help to counteract this and increase social bonds, making another incident like the one where we murdered each other to be less likely.
As am I. [Frowning.] That would come down to the person deciding which the believe more, I'm under the impression in some cases they might wish to prefer their life in Mayfield-- proof in front of them or not. It's an idea, certainly, but seeing how so many have turned against each other before while being allies it does seem a bit of a longshot.

Of course I'm not! If you weren't being so thick you'd be able to see it for yourself, Caesar.

I'm thick? You're the one claiming to be a witch.
It's the Fourth of July. Why don't you go and take a break for once? All that work you do must have finally fried something.

I didn't claim anything. I read something that's a fact.
[Well it sounded nice, but--] Because doing absolutely nothing will get us no where. Mind you I have no reason to celebrate an American Holiday.
