I think you really captured the anger and emotion of that scene. Poor Merlin. He was so desperate and furious that he'd have done just about anything to keep Gauis from dying.

That was a very good first fic! Great job :). I think that you captured both of them quite well and I like how you took a slightly different take on that scene (which was made of epic win, BTW) :D
