when jo and i lived in portland we lived in the NE and loved it. we were closer to the max than you guys which may have made all the difference, but it was bikeable, and there were good routes on bikes and cars and transit to get where you wanted to go. up north, as i recall, was turning into the hip area with lots of cool funky houses getting worked over and lots of neat kids and stores and small families moving in. so it would be a good neighbourhood and a good place for a family.

i don't know much about the south, sorry, but didn't nicole live around there somewhere?

(but the house up north looks gorgeous btw).

The back of my house in Portland was facing Ladd's, so I lived right on the edge of it. I adore that neighborhood and would have lived there (except the place I looked at had lame roommates). It's beautiful, they have rose gardens and parks scattered throughout, and SE is a fun, wonderful place. My vote is for that one.

Are you planning on buying a house within the year (thus avoiding the capital gains tax on selling the house in ithaca)? in which case space for gardening is not so important.

as cyberlyra says, NE was lovely place to live. bit futher away from intel.

my vote is for being near friends, i htink.

Well, the one in North portland is RIGHT by my house. Honestly, I love it up here - - I find it less overrun with yuppy-tastic people that come to the Hawthorne area in throngs. Mississippi has just about everything, and being so close to MAX is a big bonus. Just north of us is New Seasons and Freddy's, and right on the main drag is every type of food, our own movie rental spot, cute boutiques and a couple fun bars. We have mississippi sudios/station: home of AWESOME food and daily/nightly musical performances.
Plus, you'd be in walking distance to us, which is entirely of interest to me! (I know, biased, huh?) I know Nicole was a fan of living with me up in NoPo, so perhaps that should sway you?
It would be SOOOooo nice to have more cool neighbors! We can have fresh lemonade on eachother's porches and the like. Come to Ne!!

Hmm... I like SE better, but that neighborhood in NE is pretty nice. Dave might think about his overall commute. The distance to MAX may be shorter up north, but does the south side include a bus trip? If so, MAX is way easier on a bike...

I'd still probably go for the SE area.
