Unemployment is on the rise

In particular, with me. I wasn't well this morning and so called in sick today (or, rather, got Dawn to call in on my behalf, so I could go back to bed), and when I got up at around 12:00 (feeling a little better) I discovered my agency had been trying to contact me. When I called back I said I was thinking of going in as I knew we were busy, and ( Read more... )

Can they even do that? I thought they had to give you notice if they were ending your contract...

Agencies are allowed to be a little more gung-ho when it comes to hiring and firing because your contract with the agency hasn't ended. If they want, they can call you in for a day's work then drop you.

If a company tried to sack you, it's a more lengthy process because the contract has to come to an end in a legal manner.

The Day's Work is how some people like it: they get all the Emergency Admin jobs and stuff like that. Those people scare me...

The odd squad. knaw August 28 2008, 19:46:59 UTC
They are an odd bunch, and a nightmare for the Jobcentre because two days' work means stopping their benefits and restarting the day after the work is finished.

Each time the claim is restarted, they have to call the hotline then attend a meeting at their local office. Often, they find a job before the meeting takes place, and so the cycle continues.

Owing to the fact that a couple of people are about to leave (myself possibly among them), the company I work for might be taking on new staff soon. Apparently our manager is planning to send round an e-mail asking if we know anyone who we want to recommend, so I could mention you if you like? Though you should probably read my most recent LJ post before you make up your mind, it's a pretty horrible place to work so it depends on how desperate you are!

He's very desperate. Very very desperate indeed. [/Mother Spencer Mode]

Don't do anything you don't want to do Bro; I'd never stick out a job I don't like. Luckily for me I love my job... So you should move home, get a job at my place and refer to me only as "The Big Cheese". But it sucks about what your previous employer did. Mum's on holiday at the moment and I'm not telling Dad so hopefully you'll be able to get something sorted soon. It's all good work experience anyway I guess. [/Brother Spencer Mode]

This question is addressed to [Brother Spencer Mode]:

What if you hate the job but like the people? I know I would be friends with some of my colleagues even if we didn't work together.

That's why I love my job. If I didn't have such a laugh at work with the people I work with then it would just be some mundane 9-5 office job that would drive me strak crazy and I wouldn't still be in.

I just find work acts as a convenient meeting place for us all, and we get paid to be there.

I look forward to going to work every day because I look forward to seeing my friends and plunging myself into that world of crazy, not because I enjoy inputting numbers.
