previous part Part Nine (this was split in 2 due to being too big, second half is linked at the end)
Jensen walked silently next to Jared. He was slightly irritated with himself for enjoying the evening so much. He was even more irritated at the huge amount of talking he had done during the last hours. He had opened up a lot, and it was scary. He hardly ever talked about himself except to Jeff, Mackenzie and sometimes Chris. He wasn’t comfortable with it, not sure how people would look at him, once they knew him. But with Jared it was different. He was scared of how Jared looked at him when he didn’t know anything.
It had been months since Jensen’s last date - although he knew this wasn’t supposed to be a date, and it was probably mostly to soothe Jared’s guilty conscience for getting the wrong idea about Jensen. He knew that Chris would whack him over the head if he said that aloud, but Jensen just couldn’t imagine Jared changing his mind so drastically. Jensen’s mind had changed concerning the taller man, but he didn’t expect any miracles. Their chance had blown by a while ago, and although Jared was adamant about proving himself to be a good guy, Jensen had no false hopes that the man had any further agenda. Jared was sorry that his brush-off had been such a mean move. That was it.
Then again, part of Jensen’s mind couldn't stop clinging to the dimpled smiles and the blushes, the concern Jared showed, and the off-handed suggestions of sticking around. Jensen was quiet as hope and realism had a bitch-fight in his mind. Jensen knew he had issues. He always had. He was aware of the fact that as soon as his love life or his sexuality were concerned he had really low self esteem, but that way he wasn’t disappointed too often. Jared was definitely a man who had the potential to disappoint him a lot as - at moments - he raised Jensen’s hopes higher than usual. The fall would be deep and the impact hard. This made Jensen wary of assuming any more behind Jared’s invitation than absolutely necessary. Maybe Jared had enjoyed the sex and wanted more? Jensen wasn’t sure he could do that. His heart was already in the loop and that was a dangerous thing.
Jensen contemplated seeing a shrink about the fact that he'd put his heart on the line for a man who had given him more grief than anyone else in the past few years. It was just not right, but he had nothing to steel himself against it.
Jensen shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans and pulled his collar up to cower deep inside his jacket. He was startled as a shoulder bumped softly into his. He looked up to see Jared frowning at him. “Weren’t you the one making fun of me for freezing my ass off around here? But now I see you practically disappearing in your jacket… what’s wrong?” Jared gave him a nervous smile, and Jensen kicked himself mentally for letting his thoughts drift off like that.
“Nothing, I’m sorry.”
“Am I that bad company?…” Jared looked at the ground, kicking pebbles off the path. “Sorry if I make you uncomfortable. I just… I was probably really annoying with all that interrogation I had going on throughout dinner.”
Jensen watched Jared gnawing on his lower lip and couldn’t resist bumping their shoulders together, mirroring Jared’s move from before. “That’s not it, Jared. I’m not really good in the talking department, so you kinda have to weasel anything out of me.”
Jared laughed. “When I’m nervous I just babble…”
“You were nervous?” Jensen bit his lip, giving the taller man a sideways glance.
“I was a wreck! Actually… I think I still am.” Jared blushed and looked at the ground.
“Really? You don’t strike me as a wreck.”
“I try to cover the nervous sweating and the ticks when I’m around a hot guy…” Jensen laughed at Jared’s playful grin.
“There’s a hot guy around?” Jensen’s pulse sped up as he eyed Jared, feigning nonchalance.
“Definitely.” Jared stared at him with wide eyes that reported instantly to Jensen’s crotch.
“Maybe you should go out on a date with that hot guy then…”
Jared swallowed, green eyes following the bobbing adam’s apple. “I hoped I already was.”
To both man's surprise they found themselves in front of Jensen’s dormitory. Jared looked at the door and then Jensen, obvious disappointment flashing across his face. “I… I-“
Jensen closed his eyes for a moment, collecting all his courage. “I had a nice evening.”
“Me too.” Jared answered breathlessly.
“I dunno, if you are interested in anything more, but… if you are, I- I’d like us to meet again? As a real date?” Jensen pulled on the hem of his jacket nervously.
“Yes… and yes.”
He looked up to see Jared giving him a full out love-puppy look that made his heart lodge in his throat, and his mind go slightly askew. “I err… yes. Twice?”
Jared nodded enthusiastically bouncing on the balls of his feet hardly containing the bout of energy inside him. “Yes, I am interested and yes, I want to go out again.”
A smile spread over Jensen’s face, and he rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “Awesome.”
Jared stepped from one foot to the other opening his mouth and closing it again.
“What, Jared?”
“I know I should leave, but…” He stopped fidgeting and stood straight, looking petrified. “But I’d like to kiss you before I go.”
Jensen stood rooted to the spot. All he could do was nod and that was all it took for Jared to take a step closer, crowding into Jensen’s space. One large hand came up to cup Jensen's chin and tilt up his head. His eyes locked with hazel ones as his pulse sped up. Jared leaned down, and the kiss was slow and sweet. Jensen melted into the kiss, half aware that he was leaning into Jared, feeling Jared's broad chest under his fingers. A hand snaked around his hips. The stray thought slipped though Jensen’s mind that his knees could give out like this, but he wouldn’t fall. It was an ecstatic feeling. They didn’t deepen the kiss, no battle of tongues, just the soft sliding of lips on lips, eyes closed, bodies flush against each other.
Jared pulled back, hesitantly nipping on Jensen’s lower lip, making a soft moan escape his lips. Jensen’s eyes slid open slowly, and he stared at Jared, flushed with excitement and panting, just as Jensen himself was. One hand was still on his jaw, the other lying over his hip. “Yes, let’s definitely do this again.” Jensen’s voice was hoarse, but he didn’t care to clear his throat.
Jared’s face split in a smile and he leaned down for another quick peck on Jensen’s lips before his hands left Jensen, and he stepped back, teeth worrying Jared’s still smiling lips. “Call me.”
Jensen nodded and watched as Jared turned, a spring in his step, and walked off towards his own dorm with lively steps, hesitating after a few yards to look over his shoulder and give Jensen a shy smile, only to turn away again and duck his head, hastily disappearing into the night.
Jensen flopped against the door of his dorm unsure if he should bounce off the walls or hide in the nearest corner.

“So you didn’t bang him?”
Jared looked at his roommate, slightly dumbfounded. He hadn’t even had time to close the door behind himself. “What?”
“So he didn’t bang you either…” Chad gave an exasperated sigh and rolled over on his bed to have a better look at Jared.
“Nobody banged anybody!” Jared knew he sounded as scandalized as he felt.
“Pity.”
Jared rolled his eyes and threw his jacket over a chair.
“So it was awful? Did he try to hit you with something?”
Jared actually had to laugh at that. “Just because there was no sex involved doesn’t mean it was awful! We had a great evening… we talked a lot. Jensen even participated in the conversation quite a bit, so I didn’t have to do a monologue again…”
“As I said, awful.” Chad scrunched up his nose, and Jared threw his pillow at his roommate.
“Shut up, Chad!”
“Did you at least enjoy a feel of that fit body?” Jared blushed, and Chad made a 'bingo' sound.
“Well, I did hold him for a minute or two while we kissed…”
“Ha! I knew it! Tongue sex, at least.” Chad grinned like a madman, and Jared hated to break that presumption.
“No tongue anything…”
“Really? You disappoint me Jay-man! How then? Spill, and don’t spare the details.”
“No way!” Jared laughed and flopped down on his bed, toeing off his shoes and socks. “I’m not gonna kiss and tell.”
Chad snorted. “Thought you just did.”
“Shut up, you douche!”

“Do I need to kick his ass?”
Jensen smiled at Chris who was lounging on his bed with Steve. The two were looking at him expectantly, and Jensen couldn’t help but feel amazed at how great his friends were. He was pretty sure Steve had come over in case there was more drama. He gave them a grin and saw the slight tension flow out of their shoulders. “No…”
There was another moment of silence before Chris sat up and quirked his eyebrow at Jensen. “No. That’s it? C’mon, man! That guy had you all riled up for weeks, and at one point I was just waiting for you two to smash each others' heads in… now you've FINALLY got your act together and actually been out with the guy, and all you have to say is ‘NO’?”
Jensen embarrassedly scratched the back of his head. “It wasn’t that much of a drama…”
“No…”, Steve jumped in, backing Chris up as he always did. “It was more than just drama. It was EPIC, Jensen!”
Jensen sighed and leaned against the wall, looking at his shoes. They were right of course. This was utter madness. Him and Jared had had the wost of starts in the history of gay love, and still he was not willing to back off anymore. Jensen wanted this, and for once he was not willing to wait for better times.
“I like him… and he likes me, I think. Judging by tonight… and I want this to work out. I know it’s a huge goddamn mess, and we’ll have to work through a lot of issues, but I think it’s worth it.”
He heard the ruffling of textiles and saw Chris’ shoes emerge in his line of sight. “You’d deserve it Jensen, and if you think he’s worth the trouble then you should go ahead… but I’ll skin his huge ass alive if he breaks you heart, you hear me?”
Chris’ hand squeezed Jensen’s shoulder, and Jensen looked up with a small grin. “He told me you actually waited for him outside the library? Dude, you freaked him the hell out!”
They laughed.
