The thing about low income housing...

ok this is going to be a ramble. I'm not mad, so it won't exactly be a rant, but I am relatively uninformed, so I can't in good conscience call it an opinion (although i guess it is one), but what I am looking for is some feedback so that I can get a better understanding of the issue at hand and maybe have a better informed opinion at the end of ( Read more... )

My parents raised five kids and I have no idea how the hell they did it. They were lucky enough to grow up in a time where it was feasible to work a part-time job and be able to pay for college with that money. But we never really went on vacations and very rarely went out to eat-when we did it was often a buffet. I am so tired of people acting shocked and amazed when they hear I never did any international travel before my current job, but that could just be the DC overprivileged yuppie effect I'm dealing with ( ... )

You are obviously a racist nazi person.

Rent control creates an artificial aristocracy and drives up the rents for everyone else in NYC, but you are talking about something else altogether right?

I think there should be limits to how much a person's rent can increase from one year to the next, but other than that I'm with you all the way.

excellent - i have another member of my juli g. local nazi of new orleans party ;)
i really DO understand a lot about city planning and such - that wasn't really what I was looking at. I just don't feel all that empty inside because there is a large portion of the population that can't afford to rebuild in new orleans. I mean hell - I can't afford a new Toyota, and no one is throwing me a freaking benefit. There are going to be things in a capitalist society that some people can't afford; sadly, living in Orleans Parish is about to become one of those things.
Oh I forgot, i totally dig being a racist. Now excuse me, I have to find that confederate flag rear window decal for my car ;)

Well, although you seem to enjoy your title of local nazi or the new orleans party, I hate to tell ya that I don't think you're remotely fitting that title. I think you make some incredibly valid points...and I DO believe that there are some places that are not the best places to bring your undereducated self, spouse and five kids and expect to be taken care of. You stated so truthfully, WHAT WOULD indicate that post levee break NOLA would intrigue people to pull up stakes and relocate there? I don't get it ( ... )

It's a really interesting time to be here in New Orleans, I mean, I really get to see what kind of city is going to develop out of the ruins, ya know? I have definitely gotten to see my share of how gentrification can change an area, but this; well this is a horse of a completely different color. I would love to think that New Orleans is going to get it right and focus on being a creative community (which is about the only thing we ever got right) and that just maybe the higher cost of living might mean we can dedicate more tax dollars to public schools. Tangent - the school system here is WEIRD!!! I mean, almost EVERYONE of any means whatsoever goes to private school. Where I grew up, you went to school based on where you lived, and then a few people went to private school but pretty much the areas that were "nicer" and thus had higher tax brackets, had the better schools. Lord, I could ramble about this for days I guess ( ... )
