[Action/Video] | June 4, in the Item Shop (Robert spams this post man) semper_cogitans June 5 2011, 02:47:03 UTC
[There was a war, but life had to go on in some capacity.

As much as Robert didn't want to be outside, he had to be. Living with Ingrid for the past couple of days out of necessity - after all, Doctor McCoy had been drafted - had been uncomfortable for him in several ways, and he'd often find himself crying even when his journal pings were successfully returned by his friends. The thought of them being out there, risking their lives, scared him in every way possible.

... Still, he had to do basic things for Ingrid - she deserved his help, as much as he just wanted to shut down. And one of those things that she needed help with was looking for her intangibility device.

So, like clockwork, he sets out to the Item Shop like he had every day for the past several weeks. He expects to find nothing, again - his cynical, depressive mood is running full-force right now - but to his surprise there's a single case, marked "I. G.", just sitting there ( ... )

[Even if she did tell him that, it's unlikely that he'd know the reference to "German" - though he does know what the Holocaust is to some extent. He saw footage of it, footage that is treated with a terrified pseudo-reverence on Terra (as is most war footage - evidence of stupidity, of what never to go back to).]

... Did... d-did he come home safely...?

[Robert is definitely uncomfortable, yes, but... he can at least talk about war, now. That's more than he used to be able to do.]

...Yes, he did.

[His scars weren't the visible kind.]

[The invisible ones can be the most damaging.]

... I am glad that... h-he was safe.

Was... he f-forced to fight, like the villagers here...?

[Or did he fight of his own accord? That question is one that still frightens Robert to ask.]

[That... is a complicated question. Ingrid sidesteps it.]

He served his country with pride.

So it was more v-voluntary, then... [Or at least, that's what Robert gets from the rather vague wording.]

I s-suppose, in some places, that... m-may seem like the only real thing to do...

[A place like that makes Robert a little sad that it exists, though. But hey, that seems to be true for most worlds. Like always, Terra is the glaring anomaly - he wants to say "diamond in the rough", but...]

Yes. He answered the call of duty to defend his nation. It was the honorable thing to do. [Though calling what he did 'honorable' makes Ingrid's stomach hurt.]

Are... th-those things common, where you are from? "Calls of duty", that i-is?

[He can't help but think that "honourable" isn't a good description, but for an entirely different reason.]

Yes. They may not have war in the future, but don't they still have duty? [Said a little laughingly. That's a silly question, Robert.]

Well, there is... o-obligation.

I s-suppose it is similar in some s-senses. [Except for the warlike overtones of the former.]

In a-any case, though... your f-father was not... f-forced, like the villagers. At l-least, not to the extent that those that were t-taken were.

... Then a-again I doubt any w-war was forced to that extent... The M-Malnosso have such ridiculous p-power over us. It is i-infuriating.

[She doesn't want to get into a discussion of duty vs. obligation, so she addresses the second part of that.]

No one in my world could force people to fight to this extent. And even if they could, they would not send children and ignore warriors.

[Robert bites his lip gently.]

I... d-do not understand how it is even helpful to... s-send such people.

...

H-how could we even do anything at all...?

Being helpful is hardly their goal, I would imagine. These drafts seem like part of the experiment to me.

But... it is a w-war.

The object is to win, is it n-not? Why, then, would they cripple their own chances of winning...?

[Robert shakes his head.]

There is a p-possibility it is all j-just staged, but... Ockham's R-Razor...

Can you really apply Occam's Razor to people like the Malnosso?

[Action] semper_cogitans June 8 2011, 07:10:16 UTC
Ockham's R-Razor is... u-ubiquitous in its a-application...

...

B-But of course, the parameters for what is the "simplest" d-decision are hard to j-judge with the Malnosso.
