All things being equal, this assignment ought to be a cakewalk: go to the Poseidon, confirm the (former) agent's identity, find out what he's there for, and get the hell out. Behind Amaryllis, there's a large school of fish, forming a throng that obscures most of the ocean and then disperses as though startled by a larger predator. With his attention split between the woman in front of him and the sea behind her, James almost doesn't catch that glimpse - but he does, and Amaryllis turns, curious, to see what caught his eye. By the time she does, though, there's nothing to see but fish and James draws her away from the window with a hand on her hip.

From outside, it's hard to tell what they're discussing - she plays at seriousness, he persists at making her break it with laughter, holding her wineglass in his own hand to prevent her spilling it when he kisses her.

Pelagia wonders who the woman is - regardless of her name and potential for import to James, Pelagia has no qualms about swimming up to the glass and peering in, waiting patiently for him to notice. He's perceptive. He will eventually.

It's oddly similar to the first time they met.

'Odd' is a decent adjective for the look on James's face when he does realize she's there, catching her eye from over his redhaired companion's shoulder. Damn it.

("No, don't look. They're eating something out there, it'll upset you.")
