Because I totally haven't been waiting to do this for a week. . . . *shifty eyes*
This is Gratuity Tucci. And yes, she's heard all the jokes and questions you might have about her first name before. "Gratuity" didn't turn out to mean what her mom thought it meant, okay? When people ask her what her mom's like, she says she's very pretty. When people ask if her mom is smart like her, she says she's very pretty.
Gratuity's friends call her "Tip". She calls herself that, too. But she's very particular about who falls under the heading of "friend", and she'll get a little prickly if you start calling her that without her permission.
Tip hails from The Smek Series by Adam Rex, which currently consists of two books: The True Meaning of Smekday and Smek for President. She also hails from Pennsylvania. She's only aware of the latter of these facts.
When Tip was 11 her mother was abducted by aliens. They brought her up to their spaceship and made her fold laundry for them, a fact that Tip's mom insisted on telling everyone when they returned her the next morning. This led to a lot of discomfort and disbelief for Tip and her mother right up until Christmas Eve of that year, when Tip's mom got abducted again and the aliens decided to make their presence on Earth known to the world as a whole.
The next six months were extremely uncomfortable for Tip, who had no one else in her life to depend on. She'd never really been that dependent on her mother before, though, so she made out alright. When the aliens, called the Boov, decided that the Earth was really just far too crowded for both Boov and humans to live cheek to cheek, so to speak, and announced that all humans must therefore move to special Human Preserves, Tip decided that rather than ride in the Boov-provided rocketpods, she'd drive her mother's car there, instead.
Because, you know, eleven.
This turned out to be one of the most important decisions Tip ever made, actually. It led to her meeting her best friend in the entire solar system, a Boov who'd taken the Earth name of J.Lo, and to the two of them figuring out how to vanquish the Boov's warrior alien foes, the Gorg, and save all of humanity from subjugation and ruin.
And that's just in the first book.
Tip is headstrong, independent, and slow to trust even the people to whom she's meant to be closest. This made life extra hard when, after the invading aliens left Earth and life returned to some semblance of "normal", her mother realized that she had to step up and be a responsible parent for her daughter. Tip had just spent several weeks living on her own in a car with only an alien and a cat for company. Having a parent telling her what to do chafed. This initially resulted in Tip swanning off without permission to New Boovworld (née Titan), and then -- for our purposes -- with Tip deciding the best thing to do would be to go off to boarding school. Unfortunately, this means leaving J.Lo behind. A fact that neither of them has quite entirely dealt with their feelings about, after living so closely together for the last few years.
Tip is under the impression that coming to Fandom means she'll won't be living in close quarters with aliens anymore. She is going to be rather bemused when she actually gets here.
J.Lo is not about to let his best friend run off for another adventure without him without a few tools and prizes, though. She's got her own set of Boov tools, for instance -- most of which she has only the faintest idea how to use. She's got a Boov gun, jammed with pink gap-putty to its lowest setting, "blue" (it turns things blue. The Boov think this is entirely self explanatory) (the other settings are "erase", "tummy trouble", and "comasleep". There's a good reason for that gap-putty). She has Bill, a semi-sentient Boov billboard, who mostly looks like a little robot bug with a horn on his butt. Bill extrudes bubbles, which the Boov use as their written communication. Tip sometimes even knows what Bill is trying to tell her.
Tip is also equipped with a Boov translator device on the back of her neck. It looks like a large, possibly malignant mole. That sometimes glows purple or green. It will be almost entirely useless in Fandom, especially at the beginning, as it only knows English, Boov, and some Italian from Tip's mom. The devices were used by the Boov to learn Earth's languages when they first invaded, though, so it is likely to pick up on some commonly used words and phrases she might encounter in other languages. So Tip may eventually get really good at cursing in a wide variety of languages. And then have to pardon herself a lot.
Hi, I'm Bella! You may know me from such other characters as Pinkie Pie, Raven Darkholme, Eliot Spencer, and Priestly. But only one of those (Eliot) is sticking around the island this summer (PINKIE IS COMING BACK DO NOT FEAR), so I don't really feel like doing a whole info song and dance for all of them just now. Most of what's in the
last bulk post I did still applies, anyway, other than Pinkie and Raven not being on island for awhile.
But yeah, me! I like absurdity and cute things and beating the crap out of characters when given the least excuse. I'm on the east coast of North America with a west coast of North America schedule. I like books and I already own probably more than I'll ever actually read, but the act of buying books soothes me so wtfever. I work in publishing, but not the interesting kind (tax news. I publish tax news). So I play a lot from work.
I am eternally pokable on email (bellatemple @ gmail . com) and frequently so on IM (NotISaidDuck). And I'm not sure how entirely informative I'm actually being today, but I'm having fun so mneeeeeeeeeeeeeh.
