Looking over my gaming history, I've come to realize that what usually seals the deal for me about a game is if the characters are likable.
Oh gosh, me too. .o. I tried to deny it for a while, but. Heck, I think I can even forgive a terrible story line if the characters are extremely likable. I didn't read your ~spoilers~ section in this post yet (s-still need to beat the game), but I have a feeling I'll agree with you on most points if not all. Story was lacking, no real connection to any of the characters (such little dialogue probably worsened this issue)...and unfortunately, no amount of beautiful music or breathtaking backgrounds can make up for those two, for me. : (
....WELP, back to a second playthrough of Odin Sphere!
I'm pretty much the same. If I love the characters completely, but I hate the story, I'll probably imagine a new story and insert that as my own personal head!canon.
If you want good items to help you beat the game, go after the white challenge cave in Yamato. I think it yields a sword or a bracelet that locks your sword power at 700, no matter what sword it is. Between that, and the white challenge cave at Izu (Total Pandemonium), it gives you some of the most useful equipment--the Izu cave giving you a bracelet that lets you spam the sword skills without draining any Soul Power.
Levels needed for Yamato are 54+, I think. For Izu...92+. And trust me, save your healing items and kumori stones for the Oni. DX
When you've beaten the game, come back and read spoilers to let me know if you indeed agree with me. I'd love to find another perspective that makes things more palatable for me. XD
