This week got away from me a little bit, but I am pleased to report that I am back on track! Time for a bit of catch-up.
30 Days of Torchwood: Day Five - A scene that made you cry
Ah. Back to the difficult questions. Not because I'm going to puff up and do that whole stereotypically masculine thing and claim that I don't cry. I do. It's just that when I do shed a tear, it's not necessarily because I'm sad.
Plus, you know, there are a handful of really obvious answers that I sort of feel like I should trot out. Toshiko, Owen, and Ianto's deaths are on that list, and I wouldn't for a minute think to say that those scenes don't make me cry. Hell, reading episode transcripts of those scenes can choke me up something awful. They just seem like really obvious, "gimme" type answers, and that's not particularly enlightening or entertaining for anyone.
So.
I cry at the end of Random Shoes. Not at the funeral -- which, speaking of, can we just declare a moratorium on singing "Danny Boy" at funerals in film, television, radio, and real life for the rest of human history? -- but the proper end, when Eugene appears, saves Gwen, and then does this thing which can only really be described as ascending into the literal heavens. It's one of those moments that contradicts so much of the ordinary mythology of Torchwood, and it's shot from his point of view with him talking to us. And as it's happening, he's just so earnest and himself.
It's beautiful and strange and sort of ridiculous. Pass the tissues.

30 Days of Torchwood: Day Six - A scene that made you smile
Lots of choices here, too. That's one of Torchwood's strengths, frankly. There's always a lot of humor, even when things are bleak. My first thought might be the "poodle" moment or when Ianto whips out his stopwatch in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Still, I'm trying not to duplicate episodes too much if I can avoid it.
I'm also guessing that deleted scenes and outtakes don't count, which means I can't trot out "Captain Andy" either.
So, with those considerations in play, I humbly submit this moment from Sleeper:
OWEN: And what if they can't stop it?
TOSHIKO: They'll stop it.
OWEN: Yeah, but if they can't?
IANTO: Then it's all over.
OWEN: Let's all have sex.
IANTO: And I thought the end of the world couldn't get any worse.

30 Days of Torchwood: Day Seven - Your favo(u)rite quote
You realize that after Day Six, this question is unnecessarily cruel, right?
[insert sulk here.]
Actually, thinking about it, there is a quote that's dear to me that I've used quite a lot since 2006, and I'm positive that nobody ever notices. I'm almost reluctant to post it, actually, but here goes.
Sometimes, when I do something well and somebody notices, I just smile and say, "
I try my best." It's a thing that genuinely brings me joy. That it's virtually invisible just makes it even better.
Of course, now that I've explained this I may have to stop. Ah well.
