I actually need to vote in favor of the use of "Danny Boy" in "Random Shoes." The narrative is very aggressive about placing Eugene in terms of class and family estrangement, and in the use of that cliche in that setting with those attendees, I think underscores the degree to which Eugene was, and was not, of his world of origin. I think it's a conscious choice about cliche, as opposed to a sloppy reliance on cliche.
That is because Random Shoes is fucking fantastic.
You make a really good point here. I think my knee-jerk is just personal fatigue with the song having become a caricature of itself generally, both in media an in real life. Within the episode, though, it's actually very much the sort of thing that would be done.

I've not had a proper opportunity to see if the joy is still in it -- and frankly, there are enough people in my life who have no idea that this journal even exists that I can still cheerfully trot it out where no-one's the wiser, but...well.
