Okay, so clearly my whole midweek Internet situation is unkind right now. Time to play catch-up!
30 Days of Torchwood: Day Twelve -Your favo(u)rite couple scene
Oh man. Cruelty. This may have to be a tie, and it's definitely going to contradict my whole process of elimination thing from my last post.
The first is a scene in Children of Earth where Gwen and Rhys are smuggling themselves into London via haulage, and they end up in a truck full of potatoes. Now, remember that in S2, Gwen has this really defensive conversation with Andy about Rhys' appetite, which sort of turns into a running gag all through "Adrift." (Example: "How's Rhys?" Andy asks in that ep, and follows up by muttering, "Other than hungry?")
So they're in this potato truck and Rhys has been all excited about how it's going to be a food truck, and then disappointed that it's potatoes, and then he pulls out his penknife and Gwen is all, Oh no. You are not even about to eat raw potatoes.
It's comedy gold.
The other would have to be Jack and Ianto's office scene in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. It's so brilliantly played. Jack actually gets nervous, Ianto gets huffy, and it's this brilliant sort of dance where you know there's a lot that needs dealing with, but that they're both also wanting to pick up where things left off. It's great, great stuff.
30 Days of Torchwood: Day Thirteen - A piece of music you love from the series
In the scored music, I have to confess a fondness for Jack's action theme, aka the "
ruddy great tractor" thing. It's satisfying and infectious. I hum it a lot, especially if I have to deal with big spiders.
(Hey! Don't judge.)
A lot of the licensed music that they use on the show is quite good as well. The first bit of it I remember buying, though, was an album by The Automatic with "Monster" -- the song from the intro to Countrycide -- on it. This was especially hilarious listening on the way back from my first Dragon*Con whilst driving through Southern Illinois.
If you have ever been in Southern Illinois late at night, you know as well as I do that it's absolutely cannibal country.
Apparently I'm all about Countrycide. Who knew?
30 Days of Torchwood: Day Fourteen - Something you’d like to re-write in the series
*looks around* Er. What, another one? I mean, honestly. Haven't I done enough damage?
Heh.
It's interesting. There are always things that I see that I'd like to believe I could tweak a bit if I were in charge. Little plot holes, or episodes that I think could use more cowbell, etc. Still, I don't really feel compelled to make Torchwood conform to my preferences in the sense of wishing I could rewrite parts of the series in a serious way.
Now, if I were given the opportunity to make some broader changes, I'd have suggested making some of the things we see in the spin-off media -- radio plays and audios, esp. -- that bridge S2 and S3 a little more canonical by putting them on screen. I think that those of us who've kept up with that were maybe more prepared for Children of Earth because we had more story to work with, whereas I can see how to folks who weren't that keen on the audios and such maybe wound up in a position to feel confused or short-changed. Even a three or four episode run would have bolstered things a little better, and given us some more breathing room between Exit Wounds and CoE: Day One.
Intellectually I know that Gwen, Ianto, and Jack had some time to regroup, but it would have been good to get a little more of that on screen.
On the other hand, with the events of CoE being as fraught as they are, maybe that launch into high stakes is more effective for not worrying about the gaps so much?
