The fact that there's a Sephiroth in the Nexus is hardly any surprise - as there's anywhere from one to five there on any given day, but this one is still comparatively new to the Nexus.

And for the moment, he'll just be busy trying to get a feel for the contained chaos of the place, as he wanders idly through.

This Cloud's not quite so new, being a visitor in the Nexus a few times in the past. And though he's not quite as angsty as he was six months ago, he's still slightly unbalanced.

Which...is probably why Zack told him to get out. Get some fresh air, so to speak. So out he gets, walking aimlessly as he slightly grins at Nexus happenings.

Which ... might not work quite as well as Zack had intended as Sephiroth kind of goes walking right past Cloud, giving him a slight nod as he goes.

Cloud's eyes widen at the sight of ... well... at the sight, half choking for a moment before managing to point dramatically and declare, "YOU!"

Sephiroth turns at that dramatic declaration, quite unaware of what might be brewing.

"I can't think of who else I might be," he answers calmly.

This... might not end well. But at least he hasn't drawn Masamune yet.

And therein lay the problem. He couldn't explain it away; didn't have an answer for what he'd almost done. Or had done, in the case of this Cloud's version of him.

"I can't answer that, Cloud. I wasn't the one who was there."

Not that... he expected the other version of himself to be of much help if he'd followed the path that only luck had saved him from.

Cloud stares in an incredulous fashion at Sephiroth, mouth falling open slightly before lips pressed tightly together in a stubborn look of defiance and anger.

Cloud's memory might be bad, but it wasn't that bad.

Damn Sephiroth for belittling Zack's sacrifice.

"Then who was, Sephiroth? Answer me that."

Sephiroth represses a sigh at that. He just wasn't getting it, was he? No matter. If his alternate self had done what he expected he could hardly blame Cloud for being bitter.

"I would have been," he finally answered, "had it not been for a timely intervention."

Thank the gods Zack had had the sense to stop him.

Cloud would have kept making recriminations, if Sephiroth's pointed consideration hadn't registered.

He eyes Sephiroth out of the corner of his eyes, quickly going back over their conversation of the last few moments. He had... but Sephiroth had said... but he hadn't attacked yet and... he hadn't taunted Cloud with destruction or the massacre of his loved ones and now, now Cloud was very confused.

Cloud's eyes narrowed in suspicion at the taller man, almost wanting Sephiroth to return to the way he was before. It was... easier dealing with that man.

"...What?"

A faint smile at that, although whether it's because he's noticed the tone in Cloud's voice or because in his weird little way he does actually care for his Cloud is a little unclear.

"He's fine."

"Oh," is all Cloud manages to get out before his throat tightens up. A few moments go by before he's sure he can take a breath again without doing something stupid, without making his words waver.

"And he's still at ShinRa? You all are?" Cloud's fishing, if Sephiroth hasn't already picked that up.

"We are."

Sephiroth's noticed, but doesn't mind answering questions for the time being. It the least he can do after all.

He sharply pushes down the bitterness welling up in him. "So he's..." 'Still a cadet?' Cloud wants to ask. Somehow, he can't get the words out.

"You shouldn't be," Cloud says before he even has a chance to censor himself. He shifts uncomfortably before deciding that he might as well warn them. He owed it to Zack, at the very least. This Zack. The other Zack? No matter, it was still Zack. "Hojo."

"No," Sephiroth answers quite truthfully. "It isn't easy to make it to SOLDIER, after all."

His Cloud, on the other hand, might have been disappointed if he hadn't made it.

"But... you made it. And Zack made it." And his alternate made it. And...that was the joke of the matter, wasn't it?

"What did I do wrong?" Cloud chokes out, fingers grasping at Sephiroth's sleeve. "I tried so hard, and I just wanted to be strong and fast and not be left behind." Cloud's not thinking how strange it is to be seeking answers from his 'enemy'. After all, he had aspired for SOLDIER because of Sephiroth and Zack. This blow was just one too many for his self-worth. "I'm always left behind," he finishes quietly.

"I had something of an unfair advantage to begin with," Sephiroth answers with a sort of half-smile. "And if things hadn't happened how they had in your world perhaps you would have made it as well."

After all, he couldn't exactly be be blamed for having his dream be derailed by the destruction of his hometown and all he cared for.

Cloud looks back up at Sephiroth's words, eyes intent as they tried to see whether the other man was lying or not. It was worse when he was being patronized to, but... he seems like he really believes what he just said.

"Do you... think so? You think I would have made it?" Something's happening here, and Cloud's afraid that the wrong word would mess it all up again.

Probably not too well, considering poor Cloud's been shocked enough for today.

Cloud looks startled at that, a considering look surfacing a moment later. "I... never thought of that. I guess the Nexus is good for something after all." Cloud pauses, smiling imperceptibly up at Sephiroth. "I'm glad."

"Given the alternate, I think it safe to say I share the sentiment." And a smile as well from his side - sane definitely wins out over the alternative in his book.

His smile widens and abruptedly, he feels something that has always been a tight knot in his chest settle, snap into place. It doesn't occur to him that he's smiling at Sephiroth, of all people, the forme- current General and oh gods, they're smiling at each other and he's holding onto Sephiroth's sleeve and wasn't that just the weirdest thing ever?

Cloud blushes. Embarrassingly.

It seems like being around a Sephiroth that is... well... sane is making Cloud revert back to his old reactions.

The blush is noticed, but not commented on, although he does find it mildly amusing that they've gotten from Cloud glaring at him to this is the space of a single conversation.

And he'll be quite willing to stay here for a while, and answer any questions this Cloud might have. He figures it's the least he can do, considering the actions of his alternate.
