How about approaching relationships in a way that leaves out the painful idea of "breaking up" or "not being together"? Someone recently told me about his own approach to a relationship that he had with a friend in which they chose not to define themselves in any way, but just enjoyed each other's presence when they were able to be together.
I'm not sure if this is a long term solution that will work for you (or me, or anyone else, for that matter), but it seemed like an option that might be worth trying.

I'm not against the idea of breaking up. It's not necessarily what I want, but I can deal with not getting what I want.
