I know New York isn't named after the City of York here, but wouldnt it have been simpler to have had New Yorkshire, instead of New York State?

It is kinda indirectly named after the city of York. It's named after the Duke of York which I assume was the title given to the Duke who ruled over York back when Dukes did such things.
