When I first became old enought to think about donating to charities, charities who were looking for monthly repeat gifts would ask for $5 a month or $10 a month ... or maybe if you were feeling very wealthy you could check off the big bucks box marked $25 a month.  If they were asking for a yearly pledge the rate would start around $25 and go up ( Read more... )

Yeeeaahh, I can handle $10 a month to the children's hospital fund, and $2 a month to friends of the environment, and $5 a paycheque to the local animal rescue, but if they'd asked for $20, I would've said no altogether. Even though, thinking about it, my 'small' donations add up to $22 a month.

I think the desire to "spread it around a little" makes a lot of sense though. I could see donating a total of $50 a month but I'd want to give it to a bunch of different causes.

I agree with Josh's description of "desperation"...

Definitely off-putting though. That's for sure.
