This is not going up in the main comm 'cause it's something I'm curious about just on a me-type basis. Also, I may be cross-posting it to my personal journal eventually. Is it sad that I trust you guys more than my own FL?
I definitely picked up '>D' from Aviy, and '|D' from Excel. I also dropped ':B' which is a cute retarded face and I should use it more and CONVERT YOU ALL.
You can tell I picked up random caps too. It shows up a lot in formal dialogue, if by formal dialogue you mean things like writing betas or something. Also I stutter a lot thx Boxy.
Action tags have been the same for two years. >D TILDES ARE PRETTY GUYS. B-but I think I may switch over to brackets guys. ;; I can hold out no longer!
I picked up on a few more bits of srs slang here too. Things like sobold and shoutariffic and chikn and stuff like that. >D
Aaand in other social circles I guess I'm a little different in how I express myself? I curb all the overusage of emoticons and capslocking and I leave out a lot of the internet slang. It depends on who I'm talking to.
I used to be super super formal and polite when I was talking OOCly to someone in a game. This was mostly because I figure it's really hard to tell if someone's making a joke, or being sarcastic, or if they truly are serious online. So I was probably overly polite to make sure no one took offense... mostly because the last game I was in, people would get into pissfights over anything and everything. But now, especially in IRC, I type a lot more like I think, or how I would speak to them if we were face-to-face. I guess I've gotten more comfortable?
I've definitely picked up a lot of retarded emoticons, like the thumbs-up one and >: and especially 8D that I never used before. And I HATED internet slang before. "CAN'T THEY TYPE OUT THE WHOLE DAMN WORD OH MY GOD" was more or less what I thought of it. But I'll use it, although when I do it's more... when I'm poking fun at myself? In general being slightly sarcastic. I'll use "lol," but when I really want to express my amusement I will type out "A-HAHAHAHAHA" or something to
( ... )
I've picked up everything but the action tags...and that's mainly because there's an official action tag formatting we use at work, and I don't want to forget it. s-srsly guys i almost put stuttering into a game, my father would weep if he knew D: Thank goodness for editors... orz
Slightly off-topic, but I wonder if there is a connection between ease of picking up ways of expressing yourself on-screen and picking up other people's speech patterns? Because I know I tend to absorb those like a sponge...
I've found the level of my slang in journal writing increased the number of CFUD people were on my f-list. I have to actively turn off that part of my brain, lie back and think of the English language to get back to normal. Because prior to this I only used emoticons sparingly and typed normal. Now I've been infected. :<
