It was somewhat popular when I was born, but I've also seen it decline in popularity. In modern times, you're more likely to see it referenced than told in full, though that would imply that it is fairly well known.

King Arthur? ... Um... That's Britain's most famous king of legend, who obtained his title from pulling a holy sword from a piece of stone, right? It's a pretty famous story, isn't it? Rather than asking who's heard of him, it might be easier to ask who hasn't.
