Geek Christmas came early

I am now the proud owner of a T-Mobile G1, also known as the "Android" phone after the Google operating system it runs.  This thing is just amazing.  I'm sure I'll be discovering features for weeks...and then I plan to start coding for it.  But right now, I'm just relieved that I can finally hold my head high when fellow geeks start bragging about ( Read more... )

I have one on the way as well - should arrive on Wednesday. I've had a few co-workers (I got the phone thru an employer program) tell me I won't be happy with T-Mobile's coverage. I'd be interested in hearing how your coverage is in the coming days/weeks.

I'm told coverage is pretty good in LA and the Bay Area, which covers 95% of my needs. I'll definitely be reporting on how things work out.

Yes, do.

I'm already with T-mobile and am ready for an upgrade. I'm curious how you think the G1 rates.

So Android is spreading amongst coders. Saw a lot of traffic down here in San Diego from Qualcomm trying to Stealth Recruit Android-Coders via a Volt Office in New Mexico.

And that happened exactly ONE day after ANDROID went Open Source.

The only other person I know who had a G1, briefly, as a CEO at a law firm downtown here...an old Buddy of mine Runs the IT department there, which also makes him "Personal Tech" to all the Execs...the CEO had the phone for one day...then took it back as "too complicated" and switched to some kind of Blackberry.

Please let us know how it goes. There's about to be a big demand for Android Coders...mostly from Competitors trying to adapt.

My guess is that the Android will penetrate into the enterprise market as it is pushed out by IT departments who like the ability to create and port Java-based custom IT software projects to the phone. The fact that the Android is open and Java based will play well to many IT departments.

As far as consumer penetration goes, however, I don't see the Android-based phones usurping the iPhone.
