So, Livejournal removed a bunch of sites (example) and then had to put them back. They did so because there was a concern that said sites might have been encouraging unwelcome behaviours based solely upon interests listed. It looks like Lj tried to throw the baby out with the bathwater. A good, if not vast, majority of these sites were either ( Read more... )

That's exactly the point - people should be held accountable, but the tricky bit is the legal side. Because we can't just paint everyone with the same brush, we need to look at each case individually, but it's very very difficult to do that legally. We dont want to have such individualistic laws (and in many cases for good reason).
I agree, people need to be held accountable for their actions - particularly when they cause harm (there is, afterall such a thing as positive accountability for beneficial actions ^_-), but I just really dont know how to go about doing that...

My own stance on pornography is that it is not inherently immoral; it is a tool that can certainly be used in an immoral manner, but it can also be used to immense benefit (see the curvygirls LJ community for an excellent example of this).
As regards freedom of speech, I concur with you. But ethical accountability seems to be the real issue here, more so than freedom of speech itself: how do you measure it? How do you enforce it? Who gets to decide how it is enforced?

I agree that pornography is not ihnerently immoral - in fact, I really dont know if anything is *inherently* immoral, but that's another issue.
The problem with the debate is that people are not really sure what they're debating - it's similar to the abortion/free-choice issue; it's all to easy to lose sight of what is actually being debated. I only wrote this in an attempt to clear up the issue - I have no real ideas as to where to go from here.
