So, Livejournal removed a bunch of sites
(example) and then had to put them back. They did so because there was a
concern that said sites might have been encouraging unwelcome behaviours based solely upon interests listed.
It looks like Lj tried to throw the baby out with the bathwater. A good, if not vast, majority of these sites were either

I agree, people need to be held accountable for their actions - particularly when they cause harm (there is, afterall such a thing as positive accountability for beneficial actions ^_-), but I just really dont know how to go about doing that...

As regards freedom of speech, I concur with you. But ethical accountability seems to be the real issue here, more so than freedom of speech itself: how do you measure it? How do you enforce it? Who gets to decide how it is enforced?

The problem with the debate is that people are not really sure what they're debating - it's similar to the abortion/free-choice issue; it's all to easy to lose sight of what is actually being debated. I only wrote this in an attempt to clear up the issue - I have no real ideas as to where to go from here.
