It's not that he was particularly keen on going to a ball. It was just that he was supposed to be looking for someone and something was telling him that he was supposed to be at this ball. The only thing he couldn't figure out was whether the two sets of instructions were connected, because there was a rather could possibility that they simply weren't.

Sasuke sighed out of sheer irritation. That wasn't even the worst of his problems. Rather, it seemed no one in this kingdom [village?] could correctly identify him. He was not Hyuuga Neji. There was no long hair, no white impassive eyes. And he wasn't even going to start on the talent difference ( ... )

"Good evening, sir and madam, thank you for coming to our Ball. Good evening -- good evening!"

Lee took a pause for breath while the older Akimichi clan members squeezed past him. Then, to his surprise, he spotted Neji next in line.

"Neji! Hello! Didn't I just greet you an hour ago?"

"Tch, I'm not Neji, moron," Sasuke muttered. Honestly. What the hell. . .he would ask about Lee's general idiocy but that would get him nowhere.

Shifting his weight to his left foot, the Snake prodigy placed a hand on his hip and glared at the bowl-cut, green-swamped menace of all things intelligent standing before him. Why did he feel like nothing at all had changed?

This was going to be a waste of his time, wasn't it?

Sasuke looked around at people who were familiar and yet seemed to have no names to them. Which just brought him back to Lee. "Che. Can't even tell who I am. No wonder this place got attacked by Orochimaru."

"Neji, this is a strange time to develop a sense of humor," Lee said, blinking.

This was so strange! For one thing this person looked EXACTLY LIKE Neji, from the outfit to the haughty expression on his face. Now, Neji had always been close-mouthed about his secrets, but Lee was pretty sure Neji didn't have an idenitical twin. Then maybe those rumors about Hyuuga inbreeding held some measure of truth, and they simply all looked similar...?

"No, wait. I speak nosense. But if you're not Neji, who are you?"

More worryingly, how was this person connected to Orochimaru?

The ball.

Neji had been compelled to go. He didn't know why he felt such a compulsion; perhaps it was part of the curse, perhaps it was another swan thing that he just hadn't cataloged yet. The desire had been so great (almost as great as his desire not to go) that it had been impossible to stop himself from showing up. Though now that he was here, Neji was particularly unimpressed and wondering once again why he had come. It was a vicious circle.

He was better looking than all these people. Dressed in the finest--white, as apparently the swan in him demanded--he was above all of this. The music, the dancing--Lee. Who he had fortunately been able to avoid all night, aside from a brief interlude at the door ( ... )

Neji was busy counting the people he couldn't be bothered to dance with when a leaf fell onto his shoulder from one of the trees. And then the tree above him spoke, in a voice that sounded very much like Naruto's.

He looked up.

Naruto was in the tree above him; how very unsurprising.

Brushing the offending leaf off of his shoulder, Neji crossed his arms and turned his face back to the crowd. Naruto was not worth a kink in his neck, though Neji found it somewhat amusing that the blonde was looking for him. To prank him no doubt...it wasn't bad enough that he'd tried to carry him away like a common goose.

"I'm right here," Neji said finally, voice drawling slightly in an uncharacteristic manner that he hoped showed exactly how unimpressed he was by the situation. Dancing. As if it were necessary.

"What are you doing, Naruto." He wasn't sure why he asked. He didn't really care, though he supposed that Naruto might be useful for chasing prospectives off.

He was certainly more entertaining than watching the dance floor.
