Day 56: Cheesing Our Balls Off.

It is me or has this latest season of “South Park” been not great?

They still go after the taboo or the stupid/lacking in common sense, but the humor feels so forced.

The AIDS episode had a couple of moments, like “we’re not just sure…we’re HIV-positive.”  The Britney Spears episode had the townspeople actually singing the ominous chorus part, but ( Read more... )

The HIV positive line slayed me. And sure, they need more "kids being kids" but that's usually the case. They'll write one soon (or they shall perish)

I actually liked the Cheesing episode. But then again, I grew up with the movie Heavy Metal, and the Spitzer reference was pretty damn good.

But yes, now that I think more about it, it wasn't outwardly funny. Actually most of the humor was built around pop culture references... which is really more of a Family Guy thing. The Horror.

The Canada on Strike episode from this week is pretty good. They come down pretty heavy handed, but they knew they did and made it work for them.

Overall Kenny in tit land is the funniest thing so far this season, but this was the most evenly funny episode with all the jokes nice and spread out.

Also, Butters viral video.

I think it has to be pointed out that South Park is cranking these episodes out like an Irish wife. It takes less time to create an entire episode of show than it does to put on a live sketch comedy show, and they do it twice as often; with a schedule like that, it's hard to maintain subtlety when you're under pressure. But with all that, with a deadline of less than a week to even write the damn thing, they still put out some consistently above average episodes of television, AND keep it fresh. Loman of all people will know the value of not riding high on a popular character, and instead challenging yourself to have your ideas always move forward. Long story short, I'd say South Park takes more risks every week than most shows make in a season.

Also, Buz laments Family Guy relying on pop culture references for humor, and then in the same breath makes a pop culture reference? No soup for him.

I like the blunt force trauma. I love when you get to the last three minutes of an episode and they just come right out and say it. It's such a great "oooooooooooooooooooooh, I get it," moment.

Hey, I appreciate the fact they are able to do an episode in six days. In fact, I think that is the show's strength. Matt and Trey are funny motherfuckers and by going on their gut, they have comedy that feels fresh.

The last couple episodes felt stale. It was like they had ruminated on the idea for months, and a lot of the jokes felt forced or over-written. If you listen to the mini-commentaries on the DVDs, they rarely get anything done in the off-season, and it all happens the second they get back, which colors the humor, and I think that's why it's actually so funny.

Butters and Randy Marsh are fast becoming my favorite characters.

Randy Marsh is the best character on the entire show. No one in the history of fiction loses their shit as spectacularly as that man.
