what was even worse was catching McKellan using it

That was probably on request, to avoid confusing the american audience. When Star Trek: Next Generation started, apparently Patrick Stewart was asked to pronounce various words (eg 'leiutenant') the US ('lootenant') rather than UK ('leftenant') way. After several seasons, however, he seemed to give up, and the english bods in subsequent Star Trek series seemed to have carte blanche to pronouce words any way they chose...

do all Americans pronounce Templar (as in the Knights Templar) with the stress on the second syllable and pronouncing PLAR to rhyme with far?

Pretty much... there are of course regional differences, but I think most Americans pronounce it that way.

This is also how I would pronounce it if I were given a chance to pronounce it, which I don't think I ever have been.

My favorite is how we pronounce "zebra" differently. It's so much more random than you say tomayto, I say tomahto.
