Robert Altman, director of M*A*S*H, Short Cuts, Gosford Park and many other great films, has died aged 81.

To be fair, he has made his share of dross (Pret-a-Porter anyone?) but when he was on top of his game he made some of the greatest films in the history of film making. To my mind, M*A*S*H alone guarantees him a spot in any list of greatest ( Read more... )

I was thinking he was looking so old at the Academy Awards, and that we'd been lucky to have so many good films by him over the years ...

Just heard this on NPR. :(

I remember reading about him when he got that lifetime achievement award and he didn't want to accept it because it suggested that his career was over. He did Prairie Home Companion the next year, I believe.

I haven't seen many of his movies. I love what he did with Short Cuts.

I quite liked Pret-a-Porter! I still haven't seen Nashville, that's apparently his best.

The worst problem with Pret a Porter was that bloody irritating theme song.
