baseball

It's very simple:  today, life changes completely.  For the last six months, the rhythm of life was set by other things - family, friends, food, sleep, etc.
But starting today, baseball, and more specifically, the Phillies, seeps into that rhythm and slowly takes it over.

It's a pernicious and curious thing, baseball.  The virtually-daily games are ( Read more... )

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone.

"I don't know what is worse, losing the first game of a 162 game season, or listening to people complain about it. The radio was fraught with people trying to spew distorted facts on why the Phils lost and why this team is just like all the others. What amazes me is that this team is almost exactly what everyone wanted. How can it be just like all the others ( ... )

guess you read the same blog. it's one of many i read, i'm sure you're aware, but check out beerleaguer, a citizens blog, thehardballtimes and baseballprospectus... the last one is a $40/yr subscription for stat stuff and projection related articles, but it's more than well worth it. just signed up this year.

but anyway... another L today. i was at the game wednesday night too. when madson came back in for the 11th, my friend and i commented we needed a curt schilling towel, ala 93. at least hte bullpen did well today. under no pressure, but, still.

the team is still good, two losses that could have been wins. but with the mets and braves 3-0, and both looking solid, it could be a very long year. i'm less optimistic than i was in early march that we will win the division.

that's another great thing about baseball. there's almost always a game tomorrow.

I'm up to about 60 blogs from many different sources on many different topics that I read on a regular basis, but I will keep your suggestions in mind and check them out. I somehow managed to have a Braves fan in my room Wednesday night as I was watching the game update on MLB.com (quickest I've found), who of course goes nuts as Madson serves up the home run. I think the offense is setting up the potential for the bullpen to struggle - we need a game of 6 or more runs very soon. And yeah, I didn't want to be 3 games back after 4 full days of the regular season, but there is tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow.
