In defense of New Orleans, there is no worse time to visit New Orleans than July and August. Try it again in April or October, and stroll through the French Quarter in the early morning. The shopkeepers get up early, wash down the sidewalks from the previous night's partying, and that clean smell of freshly washed pavement mixes with smells from half a dozen bakeries or resturants. I like to go down to the Farmer's Market early, while they're setting up. One time I went early, and there was still a guy out playing his saxophone from the night before. I watched him take his instrument apart and head home to bed while men unpacked big bags of fruits and vegetables.
I love New Orleans. It really does deserve another chance. :)
MAYBE I'll give it another try. :) I might go down during spring break this year, or some other time in the spring and make a weekend out of it. I will NOT drive down there again though (16+ hours each way is too much for me!).
