Such a lovely scene at the end. I could envision every detail of that moment. It started to get me right here:

'"But underwater?" she prompts.

"Underwater, their names sound like music," says Granddad'

The detail that struck me the most was watching Maddie's grandfather get old.

I loved this story the first time, and it takes on a whole new meaning now that your own grandfather is truly dying, and that you're so close to him.

There is beauty as well as sadness in the ending to this story. Perhaps, for your grandfather, no longer surviving without your grandmother will bring him welcome peace at some point.
