I kinda know how you feel. My elder brother went away last Chirstmas [not to a war country or anything, just to work with the Navy for 4 months of his time] but he missed his birthday and Xmas too.

We did what you're doing today.
I hope it's not bittersweet and that you can cherish the day for what it is.
I hope everything's alright with your step-dad too.

Aww right, yeah the life in any type of forces is tough. I wouldn't say you get used to it, but after a couple of times you can brace yourself because you know what it's going to be like.
