The nandina bushes in front of the house are bent over with ice, there are icicles hanging off the shed, the bamboos at the back of the yard by the woods are drooping over, their bushy tops glazed over and so heavy they are lying on the ground at the pets' cemetery ( Read more... )

Stay inside. Don't fall down! Don't Drive!

Much as I've complained the last few days, I'll take our 5 feet of snow over your ice any time.

I absolutely agree. Snow at least is soft if one falls down!

And ice breaks tree limbs and weighs down power lines.

My poor nandina! As soon as the ice thaws, I'll try to straighten them up before they snap.

(A woman in Knoxville reported that her bamboo grove was full of broken bamboos that were "snapping like pencils.")

School has been canceled for the day here because of the wintry mix. I'm reading, too, and staying put. Be warm!

They will have a disaster for years to come at the house where the salt truck dumped its load on the lawn.

I've been thinking about that--it was like pouring Roundup onto the grass!

Even worse -- the Roundup does not kill the soil, just the stuff growing on it. It was like pouring some kind of permanant soil sterilizer onto it, and the entire yard will need to be dug out with a backhoe a foot down and the dirt must be replaced with new black dirt!
THEN comes the pain of trying to establish a new lawn.

I hope the city will pay to have that done.

If it turns to rain it'll melt quickly. But your bamboo will probably snap, I fear. It's not as tough as it looks.
:(
Those poor people with salt on their lawn...that's worse than the ice!
I'm really glad you still have power, Jackie!

PS Have you taken any photos through the windows?

I took a few, but they were lumpy and boring. I thought I'd wait for more light--it's ten in the morning now, and so dark the streetlight is on! But the wind is rising, and it's a warm wind from the south, so maybe the ice will soon begin melting.

Ice is so much worse than snow, but ice under snow is scarier.
