Tuesday, hot gardens

Jun 14, 2011 08:14

It's June, and that means june bugs making lace out of the four-o'clock leaves and baby mimosa trees sprouting among the carrots and beans in the vegetable garden.

June also means too little rain and hot humid afternoons, so that even the dandelions shrivel up by the shed.

Everyone should have rhinestones on their sunglasses. I don't, but that doesn't mean I don't want them.

We had one of those mowers when I was a kid - used to do an acre and a half yard with it once a week. They work great, as long as you keep the reel sharp.

The sound of those whirring mowers is part of my childhood. In those long-ago times there were no power mowers.

Really, it takes no more effort to mow this way than with a power mower--but our lawn is old and settled-in, without lumpy hillocks or weeds or sticks.

Every time I attempted to start the old mower, it was more and more uncooperative. Finally, I gave it (and the red gasoline can) to my handy neighbor, who doesn't mind grappling with small engines.

Me, too!

I just came from the post office and grocery store--I bought a box of banana Popsicles...

It is so hot here as well and very very dry. The garden wilts before my eyes and I'm out at all hours refreshing it.
We both live in hot climates, it seems.
But yours is so much greener as you have more rain and humidity and I love the verdant second picture here. The lushness of our gardens fades until Autumn.

I remember our whirry push mower from when I was a child. I loved cutting the grass with it.
:)
Yes, bunnies eat berries.
I want to see your rhinestone sunglasses, Jackie.

I'll try to remember to take a picture of my sunglasses.

They are tinted pink--I thought it would make me feel optimistic.

As for the push mower--our dad used to make us paths for our tricycles. How fun that was! He would make signs with arrows, too, and name the paths.

I saw someone using a push mower not long ago. When I again have a yard to mow, I want one.

I got ours at Home Depot. Only $100, cheaper by far than a power mower! And bright green...

Thanks! It's heating up fast.

I'm hoping for late day rain.
