Primarily my summer writing projects have been editing and submitting stories from earlier this year and last year. Most of the markets for literary fiction are closed during the summer, so my options for submission are limited until September. Which is good if I'm trying to avoid rejection letters, like yesterday's Paris Review form letter. I send ( Read more... )

Stick to your guns. Go for the paying jobs if that's what you want!

Rejection notices mean that you're out there swinging at the ball.

I learned to roller skate at a group skate on my 40th birthday, a few years divorced, and still much bereft.

I fell down every 5-10 seconds for almost two hours (lotsa rejection) on that first outing. A friend who was a good skater watched the performance, and her wry comment was, "Carlton, you are going to find another wife!"

It took a number of years, but i kept swinging and found a good one.

So don't give up. Falling down is part of the process!
