Some of the surprising statements uttered by Doris made conversations with her interesting, if at times confusing.
I worked at the nursing home as a carer.   My craving for a life of luxury was ( Read more... )

Sad, yet the fact that Doris had such a rich and colourful past, and was still able to tell us about it before she died has made her live on, she lives on in my memory anyway.

You would have liked her spirit, I was once told (by nursing director) to make her eat her dinner, as she only liked to eat cake, I offered to help her with her meal, she let me pick up the spoon then I ended up wearing the mashed pumpkin, nice yellow spots on my white uniform ...from then on I just sneaked her more cakes at tea times, sometimes you lose.

Oh my, you write about Doris so well. The character comes off the page, so full of spirit and unconventional thinking for her time.

I love the details of what was in the suitcase-- past elegance and style, to match all the parts of her you described.

Lovely, both for the writing and for the happiness you bring in describing love for such forgotten people.
