pwn comes from gamer speak when they're fighting online and one of them kills something or beats another and it's like saying 'i'm going to kick your ass' when you say 'i'm going to own you', so when that's typed in the heat of battle it often comes out pwn. the meaning isn't really own. it's more of a 'completely beat you without any appearance of effort'. like the time i got stuck between a snow bank, a snow bank, a car, and didn't want to take the open way out so i slip across the hood and 'completely pwned colby's car'. that was the guy who owned it. so it's like proving your ability to kick someone/thing's ass without even needing to do anything to prove it. for a better explanation, ask cory.
ya, i know the meaning of "own" when it's used that way, like not possessing something, but what i really don't understand is why people seem to think it's cool to write it with a 'p' just cause it sometimes come out that way when typed quickly. it's like kinda like "fcuk". switching the c and the u just makes "fuck" spelled really stupidly, and stupid people somehow think that just because it's not truly the original word this makes it more acceptable. really it's just a way of being stupidly profane, instead of just profane. may as well just spell "fuck". so why use a 'p' when the word, regardless of which meaning you're using, is "own" not "pwn". maybe i just answered my own question though. maybe it's just people be stupid and thinking they're cool. or maybe there's a totally different explanation for it that i'm just completely missing. who knows. i certainly don't.
no, not people being stupid at all. pwn has a different meaning than own. if you own someone in that sense, you have proved it, you have beaten them. if you pwn someone, there has been no proof or effort. you're just completely higher than them. so totally stronger that it's like stepping on an ant that you haven't even noticed.
well that's just silly. to me. it still bothers me that people don't just come up with a new word, but instead bestow a similar but different meaning to an old word that's just purposely mispelled. it would be ok it it were a different spelling that still resembled the word, but how do you pronounce 'pwn'?? i assume the same way you pronounce 'own'. and it's annoying when things aren't spelled phonetically that didn't evolve that way linguistically. but no, this is just because of a keyboard layout. fuck, i hate being so linguistically picky.
