It is true, when you are down, adverse things do seem to happen more than at other times. You just have to trust that things will improve, easier said than done, I know.
Birthdays are over-rated, I can see why they are difficult at a time when you aren't enjoying life at all.
You make strange friends in hospital, accepting, forgiving, but equally as much out of touch with reality as you were. The thing I learned there was that the people who are my true friends are the ones who accept me for who I am and are supportive of my choices. I came out of hospital changed and better prepared for the rest of my life. The people I lost were not worth keeping. For me, twelve years on I regard it as a positive experience. Give yourself the chance to appraise it with hindsight.
OH, and because it was the one thing we could do that made a real difference, in yoga and in hospital a hug it means more than anywhere else - have a hug, a proper heartfelt embrace from one who recognises you are suffering!
At least there was some good in the bad, I guess... but you seem to be badly in the wars.
Maybe talk to the phone people about paying it off gradually - explain the circumstances and all and they are often reasonably able to be flexible if you're trying to work out how you can pay them, rather than skip out of it.
