These are really good for your first icons ever, I was soooo horrible when I first started, but we don't talk about those days. Number 3 is awesome.

Very good for your first attempt. Much better than mine were.
Here
is a great starting place. An overview of basic icon dos and don'ts, etc. After that,
here's a great resource for icon resources: very meta. *g* There's a whole section of tutorials, all of which could be very helpful. Some of the most basic - good starting places - for you might be the basic photoshop (if that's what you're using) there, the aspect ratio there, the cropping there, the cropping and focusing one

, and saava's text tutorial on the resource site. My best suggestion is just to play with it. The more you experiment and play around with different tools and effects, the more you'll be able to do well. Good luck and great start!
