Hydration packs

Anyone have experience with hydration packs that you'd like to share? I'm looking at buying one in the next week or so.

What are you wanting? What are you wanting to use it for?

I'm looking at a daypack with hydration, so I can carry stuff in it too. Minimum capacity of 2 liters.

I want to use it for day hikes, festivals, maybe even Gaia Consort shows... Basically, all the places where my 1L Nalgene bottles are inadequate. No serious backpacking or cycling or anything; if I get to that point, I can buy something more specialized.

Looking for the kind of thing with a sip tube?

Er, are there other kinds? Which I guess is a yes.

you mean like a camelback?

I hated it. I refill my water bottles on a regular basis, but for some reason I thought a camelback would be great for burning man. I could taste the terrible flavor of the plastic and it just didn't quit. I tried putting gatorade in there and it didn't cover the plastic taste enough. I ended up using regular water bottles.

Maybe you need to drink while riding? I found that the mouthpieces leaked or got dirty, fell down, got squished and opened full flow on me, etc. Maybe it is just me, but it just didn't work well. two 1L nalgene bottles work better, IMO.

In a pinch, you won't be thirsty, but the taste never quite goes away...

oh. I thought a hydration pack was something you put on your face during "me time".

I have no firsthand experience, but watching other people wrestle with equipment in Nicaragua, where it's just a little hot, has convinced me that if I ever get one, it'll be a platypus.

Why?

Leaks, mostly - the platypi seem to be sturdier, or maybe shaped in such a way to minimize damage somehow (more give?). Of course, we were at a construction site, and iodining/citrining the water, so there was both mechanical and chemical nastiness about. These may not be concerns for the uses you have in mind.

I think at the end of two weeks, only hard-sided nalgene bottles and platypi hadn't sprung leaks, and some of the nalgene bottles (including mine) were hairline cracked.

I can't comment on taste, because we citrined the water.
