If only William Caxton were alive today

I've decided to make a "To Read" list for 2009.

Comics
I haven't read *that* many comics, but it's an art form I appreciate, and here are a few I'd like to read

Some of The Spirit, by Will Eisner. The recent film has been poorly reviewed and, by all accounts, it's not really of the same cloth as the original, instead coming across as a poor man's Sin ( Read more... )

I've got Enduring Love on my pile of soon-to-be-reads, but I can definitely give Atonement a thumbs up. The film really captured the feel of the book, but the book wins.

I really liked The Shadow of the Wind, but my tastes can be rather simple sometimes.

Atonement is good. Personally I would say don't bother with Enduring Love. Although it is better than that God awful film we watched. Although it's hard to see how it could be worse...

I think you'd quite like The Innocent, also by Ian McEwan

I was forced to read Enduring Love by my girlfriend, in exchange for her reading some comic books. I think she got the better end of the bargain. Atonement is better, though. Thankfully. In fact, I'd say it's better than the film, because it actually goes so much into the heads of the people involved.

Books-wise, I heartily endorse Space Captain Smith, and its sequel, God Emperor of Didcot. It's pretty much Flashman in space, complete with head-hunting aliens, religious extremists and appalling double entendres.

Black Dossier is excellent- it's one of the most original attempts to expand what a comic book means that I've read in a good long while.

The other one I'd recommend is Fables- which is excellent stuff about fairy tales hiding in New York from the Adversary who took over their homelands.

You mean it was all a web of lies to entrap me into reading a book that wasn't very good? Curses!

Small-time villainy by your standards, though.
