Sometimes I really wish Darwin'd work faster. It's not to the point where I'm willing to start helping him, mind you, but I think I know where I'd start if I decided it was necessary. I really don't think New Orleans makes the rest of that state worth saving. I've never heard of any other part of the country, seriously, that was so full of ( Read more... )

A kid in an elementary school in LA gets asked by a classmate what gay is, because he says he has two moms. Kid tells classmate. Teacher overhears, gives kid holy hell for uttering the word "gay" in school, gives detention, makes kid say "I will not say 'gay' in school." Kid's mom hears, sues teacher, school. Teacher countersues for defamation.

Follow the links from Atrios' site. It's just a fucked up story.

I can't stand ignorant assholes. That teacher is ridiculous for reprimanding the child, esp. telling him the word was BAD? And then they make him write it over and over!!! How dare they push their beliefs on someone's elses kid!

UGH, that teacher is lucky I'm not the gay mom. I'd be down there with my gay partner and beat the you know what out of her.

Teach her whose kids to fock with.

lmao.

It is indeed fucked up. In Europe, we always imagine that this kind of thing doesn't happen in the States, that it's better over there than it is here.

That child should not have been punished.

Those with closed and holier than thou minds, always seem to try to dictate, change and punish those that have different views and life styles.

Darwin doesn't need any help. Violence never changed anyone's mind anyway. Keep in mind though that the problem at hand is more complex than just who is absolutely right and who is wrong. The teacher believed they were right, and in their own mind, they were. It's complicated. And frankly resistance to the acceptance of the gay lifestyle in the deep south is a risk that gay couples take when they adopt or conceive.

When someone knows that society at large is not prepared to accept their lifestyle on equal terms, then they are within their rights and duties to question and try to force change. They shouldn't be surprised when that society as whole or in parts resists their changes. Children should also never be the battle ground in these morality skirmishes.

Agreed, agreed and agreed, but I really wish the majority would keep their seriously twisted sense of morality out of my house and everyone else's.

Sheesh. I know I'm not surprised when actions that I take run counter to the majority and some unpleasant consequence comes of it. Pissed, yes. Surprised, of course not.
