so..grad school then. yay for rash decision making!
id still contact the old professor at whichever school they are at.
i plan to get a rec letter from a guy at uc merced.
I think office hours are a valuable tool for letters. Id bring a few assignments in that you did well on. Then you could swing their recommendation in your favor.
well, i'm still not 100% on going into a doctorate program yet. I'm still considering the actuary path. Additionally, my former roommate told me about Berkeley's Financial Engineering Masters. That would put me in a competetive position for investment jobs. With that masters and maybe a few years of experience, I might be able to choose where I work and still get a good/decent salary.
I also told my gf I was considering entering a 5+ year program and she got worried. That's part of why I'm not 100% yet. Another reason is that I'm not as into math as some really hardcore guys, who go out of their way to read about math and do that as a (sole) hobby. Those few people might just spend more time studying math than grad students, though.
Research. Get involved in some form of research, even if it isn't in the field you want to go into.
You aren't necessarily limited to your field of interest for letters. I was considering going to a Philosophy professor for a letter if I hadn't been able to pull 3 from ICS.
More advice later, since I'm pressed for time at the moment. If I haven't done more in a week, bug me then. Including tips for chatting with faculty.
