Dear Mr. Shyamalan: haven't you read any other sci-fi?

This post is about what *doesn't* happen in "The Happening." I don't know whether that counts as a spoiler or not, really ( Read more... )

I love your version of this - so, so much creepier and more interesting.

Also, can you email at redzils@gmail.com, I have a question for you...

Great plot! You might have a world-wide comprehension problem though, the rapture is a v. American concept in my experience; not one that's really familiar even to many Protestants outside the States.

Thank you! You're quite right about the Rapture being a largely American concept, though I think it's spreading to other countries via series like Left Behind and certain parts of the missionary community.

On the other hand, if I decide to write this, as a story, playing on the fact that this is largely an American concept could actually work to my advantage, in terms of making that fact a part of what leads people to conclude that this might be the rapture.

And that would be good. I think I *would* like to write this (as a story, of course, not a movie) -- but to do so means that I need to have things that differentiate it from Shyamalan's version.

Damn--now I really want to know which Sheri S. Tepper book it was...I can't remember anyone committing mass suicide in the ones I've read.

Ah, well, there isn't a Sheri S. Tepper book that I know of where people commit mass suicide. In terms of similarities, I'm referring to the revelation at the end of The Happening. But it sounds like you're not spoiled on it, and so out of courtesy I'm not explaining -- but if you don't care, say so, and I'll message you with the reveal.

I'd go see any movie you wrote the screenplay to. Or read a short story or book of it for that matter! M. Night Shaymalan ca go suck an egg. ;)

I'm assuming you're asking me, as the journal writer, and not asking lj_onesillymonkey.

But I think a better question would be "why NOT Roethke?"

But do tell, what is it that you're trying to understand?
