I heard an interesting comment made by someone who called into a talk show this morning.

In reference to the N.O. and Texas hurricane/flooding:

"You can see the difference between a welfare state and a working man's state."

How true this is.

I think that, is one of the harshest, most ingnorant things I have ever heard you agree to.
Seriously Jan, how fucking stupid of you to think that's true. Christ on a fucking crutch. The ONLY reason people got the fuck out of Houston is because of Katrina and people learned their lession. If Houston got it's ass kicked the way NO did first, and then NO?.. NO would have gotten the hell out of there just quickly.

It was referring to the aftermat of the storms. It had nothing to do with the evacuation other than you'll notice that people didn't sit around and EXPECT the government to take care of all of it. Yes, a lot was learned from Katrina and if that had not happened a few weeks earlier, I doubt if even half of the people would have gone thru the evacuation.
There just seems to be a totally different attitude between the Katrina victims and the Rita victims.

oh yeah...

I spoke to a few people from here that had gone down to both N.O. and Mississippi to help with the aftermat. They were totally disgusted with the people from N.O. They said that they were rude, demanding, disrespectful, and acted as if they were all OWED to be taken care of. The people in MS were more grateful and gracious for all the help that they were receiving.
They also said that it was unreal the amount of food that was thrown aside, tossed in the streets, etc. because the N.O. people didn't like it.
*THAT* is the "welfare mentality" that I am talking about. Not for people that are appreciative or for people that actually believed that everything is owed to them.

THAT is the mentality of poor people Jan. For fuck's sake. If the poorest part of the "working state" of Texas got blown to hell by a hurricane, flood, fucking tornado or Bessie the mutated giant cow, they TOO would be whining and bitching about being taken care of. It has nothing to do with the "state" but the economic position fo the area in question. Houston? Full of yes, working people otherwise it wouldn't be the 4th largest city in the nation ( ... )

Well, that was certainly appalling. crankybastard September 27 2005, 04:11:04 UTC
Nice little cheap shot. I hope the stupid motherfucker who said it is proud of himself. Yeah, let's lump a whole state full of people together and perpetuate stereotypes. That was a stupid, heartless and cruel thing to say, and it was a low-rent, back-alley cheap shot. The guy's stupider than a headless cow.

Being a welfare state really only makes a difference in one respect, i.e. that the people of New Orleans are more likely to irrationally and erroneously blame the aftermath of the storm on the federal government and President Bush ( ... )

uh, there is also a big difference in actual DAMAGE the hurricane flooding caused NO and what damage was done in Houston. I have friends in Houston, aside from some power going out for a little while, and a few cases of wind damage, Houston dodged the bullet! There was no flooding, contamination of drinking water, etc. Most people evacuated out, BECAUSE the example of Katrina, knowing how serious a Cat 4 and 5 hurrican could be. It's not just NO and LA that has complaints about federal response to the disaster after the fact. MS and AL have their horror stories too, only NOLA gets the most press because of the initial focus on the unbelievable crisis of tens of thousands of people with no food and water trapped in the city after the disaster for days ( ... )
