Thanks for your message! I would be weirded out by somebody who told me they were sorry for eating meat. "Then don't eat it. Either way it has nothing to do with me." I'm already much pickier about restaurants. Whenever I go out of town I research good local places to eat where I'm going and it's now a matter of pricing ones with wide varieties so everybody can eat there. So far, it's been good, and Columbus, Austin and Denver have done me well. Vegas is next, which I am not concerned with, then Dallas. A-Kon is going to be tougher because I can't just walk to the Kosmic Kafe or Kalischanji's or what have you. If nothing else I think the West End will have some seafood. After that Idaho and Detroit might be rough but there are always Chinese and pizza places. :) I was unfortunately not invited to ACen this year so I won't be out. A trip around the vegetarian friendly places of Chicago is in my future at some point. :)
I was hoping we could make our annual trip to Kalichanji's on Thursday night. Regarding other places to eat, there is Campisi's although it is an Italian restaurant they have have lots of meatless options. Yay, for becoming 90% veggie and if you need any support let me know. I will back you up a 100%.
I was thinking of going to the supermarket before going to the con and bringing a cooler and various things to eat and drink because I want to WORK. :) I was also going to make some Krishna gazpacho and some other salads at home and bring them with me. Stuff to marinate through the trip. :)
I started weening off meat about 5 years ago and in my last year of college, I quit all together. After doing that I went from 115lbs to 105lbs, and felt better about myself! Now, it's so hard to avoid meat completely in Japan so I do my best to not eat meat when I can.
I still eat and enjoy meat, but for some reason I can't eat it in junk food form any more. I had a fast-food cheeseburger the other day to celebrate Easter (= end of Lent) and, while it tasted good, it left me feeling queasy and sort of oily for about 24 hours. Other than Chick-Fil-A most fast food just doesn't appeal to me anymore.
My diet consists mostly of fresh fruits, vegetables, and cultured dairy products (cheese, yogurt, kefir, etc.) these days, and I feel much better. I now do 60 pushups a day, too. I have to stay in shape -- His Highness needs a dad!
Fast-food is deadly to our Old People bodies, unfortunately. :( 60 pushups! I'm not arm wrestling you - you'd kick my butt! :D That being said, I hope you're up for MORTAL KICKBALL *cue music* in June. :D
Doing the diet (tm) so far has kind of pushed me over to only still eating eggs and the occasional kosher hot dog or kielbasa. Everything else is a soy or vegetable remake of a normal meat source. Lots and lots of stuff from Morning Star Farms. I don't even eat cheese anymore, it's veggies too! I've noticed that I feel a lot better, and I get way way less stomach aches. I also started a regular regime of prilosec, and that's all but obliterated any problems.
I've even found that when we've gone somewhere and I've had the points/option to eat something like that, I don't even have the taste for it anymore. It's kind of nasty.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to sell anybody on eating my way. I have no qualms about eating meat. Meat is good for you, after all, and I'm not sold on the benefits of a vegetarian diet for everyone. Some people who are hardcore vegetarians are super healthy; others look like shit. Just look at Morrisey these days if you don't believe me.
I'm just an old fart and eating fresh fruit & veg makes me feel better, that's all. I love meat in all forms; I just prefer to eat it in a form other than fast food. I still enjoy a good, greasy burger from time to time, but only the ones made by hand in Mom 'n' Pop restaurants taste good to me any more. Sorry for the confusion!
I agree with you that it's not for everybody. Our bodies, by nature, are omnivorous and we get things like vitamin B12, B6, heme iron, calcium and such from meat sources much more easily and efficiently than plant sources. Ultimately, it's about being cognizant of everything one puts in one's body and balancing it. Moderation. Some people have problems that no diet could cure, like Morrisey and Hitler. :D
