Hi! My husband and I are beginning to plan a trip to Japan next year. We want to stay in a few ryokan during our trip. In the States I take it for granted that I can request a non-smoking room, or to be seated in a non-smoking section in a restaurant. What is it like in Japan?

I've been taking Japanese for three years now, and I think I'm pretty good at it. However, one thing that eludes me, to this day, is the vocabulary. I'd like to be able to string together a sentence without consulting a dictionary, and having to always ask my teacher for words in Japanese during class is rather embarrassing.
